Relief
In 1933, it was important to provide immediate relief to stabilize the economy and give families whatever they needed. This included financial assistance, food rations, and anything else that met the needs they had as a result of the Great Depression. For us, in the wake of infidelity and mistrust, our immediate need was believing that it was possible for us to make it beyond this moment. In order for us to do that, we had to have faith. In order to have faith, we needed God.
God hadnât been a central focus in our relationship. We believed in God and endeavored to be good people, but to say that we were Christians deeply rooted in our faith wouldnât have been the truth. After Rasheed and Tyrese came to us, at the urging of God, we knew that we owed it to Him to begin developing a solid relationship with our Lord and Savior that would become the cornerstone of our relationship with each other. We began reading the Bible together and praying together, something that hasnât stopped to this day. Our day starts as early as 4:00 A.M., and before weâre off to the radio station and getting the kids ready for school, we take a moment to pray together. Every single morning. We thank God for our family, friends, and loved ones. For our health and the opportunity to make a positive impact in this world. And we ask God to help us remain close to Him, close to each other, and close to our children. Though we have many moments and conversations throughout the day together, nothing is more beautiful than when weâre praying as one.
Not only do we cultivate our relationship with God together, weâre also doing so on our own. Reading scriptures and praying, allowing God to speak to us individually, has been essential. The truth is, while one personâs actions can destroy a relationship, the relationship itself is composed of two imperfect people. We each have our own flaws, imperfections, and growing edges. There are ways we can grow and become better, fully realizing our purpose and the calling of our lives. But we canât do that if weâre not connected to the One who gave us this life and calling.
